Victoria was established in 1843 by the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trading post and still has many character and heritage buildings from that time. The picturesque Inner Harbour is a lovely stroll in any season. There is the Royal BC museum with an in-depth look at the history of B.C. , or you may wish to have traditional high tea at the Empress hotel. For the garden lovers, Victoria is a delight with something blooming all year round. The Butchardt Gardens has 50 acres to enjoy, but even the 19th century lampposts downtown boast extravagant hanging baskets full of blossoms. The city is home to the Parliament buildings, an impressive sight by day or night- when it is all lit up. There are great touring options including walking tours, horse drawn carriage tours, double decker buses and cycling. Downtown shopping areas that offer merchandise from around the world include Government street-with its 19th century shopfronts, Antique row, Victoria Eaton Center, chinatown, Market square and Bastion square. World famous for its whale watching and varied marine wildlife, other great activities like Golfing, cycling, hiking, fishing, boating and scuba diving can all be done in and around the city. drive along the coast on the 'Sea to Sky' Highway, lunch in one of many great restaurants, a stroll
through the village and perhaps a ride to the top in a gondola all add

Another option is a ride on the Royal Hudson Steam train to Squamish and a bus from there. Returning, a ferry ride back is another possibility. A short ferry ride from Vancouver (35 minutes) lies the Sunshine Coast. Home to Gibsons, Sechelt, and a number of other small communities, it is a paradise for active leisure. Kayaking, scuba, fishing, and hiking are all available in a backdrop of splendor. One striking hike can be made in Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park. A pleasant 2.5 mile trail (see photos below) leads from the parking lot to the narrows, where a bottleneck for the ebbing and flowing tides of the Sechelt and Jervis Inlets creates a spectacular whirlpool effect. ![]()
